Does your child dream of being the next Jack McVeigh? Like many kids in Tassie, my boys are obsessed with basketball and the Tasmania JackJumpers.
We always have at least one basketball in the car at all times, and we’re always on the hunt for new places to shoot some hoops.
Here’s our list of some of the best public outdoor basketball hoops.
Macquarie Point – Hobart
We’ve all heard the debate about a football stadium potentially being built at Macquarie Point, but did you know there are basketball courts on the site which are free for the public to use?

Located next to Red Square and Hobart Brewing Co, the courts are modern, fenced, have public toilet facilities nearby and feel like a hidden oasis in the city.

Giblins Reserve – Goodwood
This very cool enclosed basketball area was built as part of the Giblins Reserve playground upgrade and has seven hoops.

Most of the hoops are enclosed inside the main metal structure which means less loose balls to chase. The surrounding area is grassy, and leafy, and there’s a water view, too.
And, when you get tired of shooting hoops, you can test out swings, a climbing wall, or one of the many other pieces of play equipment nearby.

Kangaroo Bay – Bellerive
A hoop by the water, with a playground and toilets nearby, this is a nice spot to shoot a few hoops.

But it’s not far from the carpark or the water, and isn’t fenced, so it’s definitely better suited to older kids.
Riverbend Park – Launceston
Launceston’s biggest and best park is well-equipped for basketball enthusiasts with three courts.

Of course there’s plenty of other play equipment here too (including the giant climbing net and slides).
Tynwald Park – New Norfolk
This is one of the more basic public basketball hoops we’ve found, but it still does the job when you feel the need to shoot hoops.

The nearby playground, toilets and bike park with traffic lights are also drawcards.
South Hobart Playground
There’s a basketball court tucked away behind the community hall and playground on the corner of Darcy and Washington Streets.

Marieville Esplanade – Sandy Bay
We visited this park a lot when the boys were smaller. They’ve outgrown a lot of the play equipment now but there’s still a nice grassy area to kick a ball on, some swings – and a basketball hoop. Toilets and barbecues too.

Blackstone Park – Blackstone Heights
We found this park by accident a few years ago when we first holidayed at Country Club Villas as it’s only a short drive away. There’s a great flying fox, some friendly ducks – and a basketball court!

Kingston Park
This is such a huge playground that it’s easy to forget that there’s a basketball court tucked away right up in the top corner.

Apex Park – Lutana
This court is definitely one of the older offerings across greater Hobart, but it’s still a fun spot to shoot hoops.

Melville St – Hobart
This modern, inner-city basketball court can be found in Melville St (in the block between Elizabeth St and Argyle St), beside the UTAS building.

There’s also an outdoor table-tennis table here, and some basic bench seating.
A few more options
We’ve also visited basketball courts at Parliament St Reserve in Sandy Bay, John Turnbull Oval in Lenah Valley and on Main Road at Claremont. Pics coming soon.
